The National Park Service will be hosting a nice event to commemorate Memorial Day at Fort Pickens tomorrow (Monday, May 27th).

A living history encampment by Company C, 3rd U.S. Infantry, will be open from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., with uniformed reenactors conducting "Colors" and "Retreat" ceremonies at 9:30 a.m., 12 noon and 5:00 p.m.  Company drill demonstrations are set for 10 a.m. and 3:30 p.m.

Rangers will lead guided tours of Fort Pickens at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.

At 3 p.m., a moment of silence will be observed at the fort to honor and respect those who have given their lives in the service of their country.

The program and events are free, but the park does have an $8 entrance fee. Fort Pickens is located at the west end of Fort Pickens Road on Santa Rosa Island, which is accessible by bridge from both Pensacola and Gulf Breeze.

A noted coastal fortress, Fort Pickens was held by Union troops throughout the War Between the States and was the scene of heavy fighting in the form of land attacks and bombardments in both 1861 and 1862.
